360 video encoding guide
Videos are downloaded to each headset and played locally, so file size determines sync time and headset storage — not playback smoothness. These settings are validated at upload.

Hard limits (enforced at upload)
- H.264/AVC only up to 4K (3840×2160) — the Quest can’t decode larger H.264. Use H.265 for 5.7K/8K.
- Maximum resolution 8192×4096 (Quest 3 hardware decode limit).
- MP4 container only.
Camera notes
- Insta360: export from Insta360 Studio at 5.7K or 8K, H.265 — matches this guide directly.
- Files without “web optimized”/faststart will show a warning. Fix without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c copy -movflags +faststart out.mp4 - Mono (non-3D) 360 is the default. Top-bottom stereo 360 is supported — pick the layout during upload.
Practical sizing
A 10-headset class syncing a 5.7K, 10-minute lesson downloads ≈ 3.5 GB per headset (≈ 3 minutes each on fast Wi-Fi). The same lesson at 8K roughly doubles that. Prefer 5.7K unless the extra detail genuinely matters for the lesson.
